Hailed as a “a strong tenor” with “slick talking delivery” (Music City Review), Alabama native Benjamin South is a singing-actor and teacher specializing in crossover performance & pedagogy. Recently, he has performed in staged works with the Kindling Arts Festival, Tennessee Valley Arts Association, Music on Site, Eklund Opera, Central City Opera, and the Seagle Festival. Recent and upcoming roles include Preacher (FAITH), King Kaspar (AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS), Charlie (BRIGADOON), Teague (COLD MOUNTAIN), Sam (SUSANNAH), Birdlace (DOGFIGHT), and Laurie (Adamo's LITTLE WOMEN).
Benjamin frequently performs as a concert soloist and recitalist. Full works from recent and upcoming recitals include Gerald Finzi's A YOUNG MAN'S EXHORTATION, Robert Schumann's DICHTERLIEBE, Gabriel Kahane's CRAIGSLISTLIEDER, Maurice Ravel's CINQ MÉLODIES POPULAIRES GRECQUES, Franz Schubert's DIE SCHONE MÜLLERIN, Dominic Argento's LETTERS FROM COMPOSERS, and Ralph Vaughan Williams' TEN BLAKE SONGS. Benjamin is deeply committed to the performance and premiere of new composition, both in recital and staged works. Recent selections include the American premiere of James Hurley's CONFESSIONS AND OTHER LYRICS, the world premiere of Jeremy Smith's FAITH: A FOLK OPERA, and the world premiere of Daniel Swartz' THE FLOWER CRIES BLUE. |

Benjamin maintains a robust private studio teaching & coaching clients throughout the United States in diverse repertoire, including musical theatre, Western classical, and commercial styles. Additionally, he is an active researcher, lecturer, and presenter with previous engagements at the University of Maryland and the National Association of Teachers of Singing National Conference including topics on acoustic registration in musical theatre singing and trends in American musical theatre casting calls. In 2026, he was selected as one of sixteen early-career teachers to participate in the prestigious NATS Intern Program where he was mentored by Dr. Conroy Cupido.
As a dedicated multihypenate, Benjamin also spends significant time serving as a music director, collaborative pianist, and conductor. Recent and upcoming credits as a music director & conductor include HADESTOWN, WAITRESS (amateur world premiere), SISTER ACT, THE PROM, OKLAHOMA, THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, and DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS. Recent performances as a pianist include collaborations with Allie Brault, his wife, in her lecture-recital about the music of Ilse Weber. Benjamin is currently a doctoral candidate at CU Boulder and holds degrees & certificates from New York University, Ohio University, the University of North Alabama, and Estill International. Benjamin serves as Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre at Florida Southern College. |
